Seniors club granted money to complete repairs

Summerside city council approved another $125,000 to complete repairs at Parkview Senior Citizens' Club this week.

The city owns the centre, but it is operated by volunteers. Last year the city spent $70,000 repairing the front part of the roof and on some interior renovations.

Parkview president Pat Bendell said these new repairs and renovations will keep the club going for a while.

"Inside we're in pretty good shape. Outside we need a bit of work and it's going to happen now," said Bendell.

"This, when it's done, will last us for 10 to 15 years, with no more costs to the city or the Island."

This round of repairs and renovations will include finishing work to the roof, replacing the back wall and 18 new windows. One interior wall will also come out to make the building more accessible for people in wheelchairs.

The centre sees 200 to 400 visitors a week. It's open Monday to Friday, and provides a variety of programming, including cards, line dancing, bingo, arts and crafts, and a ceilidh once every two weeks.
