Some Syrian refugee families are using the services of the Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown.

Manager Mike MacDonald says six families have come in within the last week.

"We are always hoping people don't have to use our services and we were hoping that they wouldn't as well, but we did know that this time may come and we try our best to assist anybody that comes through the door. It's expensive to live and it's expensive to start up a new home in a new country, in a new province," he said.

MacDonald says the language barrier has been a bit of a challenge, with food bank staff and volunteers doing their best to understand the needs of the refugee families and serve them.

He thinks people working with the families are letting them know about the food bank and other services available in the community.
