Taiwanese food processors tour P.E.I.

Representatives of 19 food-processing companies from Taiwan are on a tour of Prince Edward Island.

Taiwan already a market for P.E.I. soybeans

P.E.I. farmer David Viaene is already selling soybeans to Taiwan.

Representatives of 19 food-processing companies from Taiwan are on a tour of Prince Edward Island.

The tour was organized by the province to promote exports to Taiwan.

The group will tour a cranberry operation near Alberton, then grain elevators in Kensington.

David and Rose Viaene hosted the group Thursday on their farm near Eldon. The Vienes already sell soybeans to Taiwan, and David Viaene believes the market has huge potential.

"We had met most of these people four years ago when we ventured to go to Taiwan ourselves to look at this market for soybeans, for tofu and soymilk," said David Viaene.

"There's 23 million people in Taiwan. I'm hoping I can expand my markets to 200 acres [80 hectares], to 230 acres, to a thousand acres in the future."

The Taiwanese business leaders will dine with the premier tonight. The tour finishes up Monday.
