P.E.I. cycling survey launched by Nathalia Cardozo, UPEI student

An environmental studies student from the University of Prince Edward Island has launched an online survey trying to find out what would encourage Islanders to bike more.

Nathalia Cardozo is doing the research for an internship with the City of Charlottetown's sustainability office.

Originally from Brazil, Cardozo decided to study the topic because she noticed there aren't as many cyclists as she thought there would be on P.E.I.

Having cycled around Charlottetown, Cardozo said she has experienced some of the risks.

"I take some courses during the night, the lighting's not so good, so the cars cannot see you," she said.

Narrow streets also pose a problem, she added.

"There are some points that you bike really near the cars, which can be a little dangerous," said Cardozo.

A lack of bike lanes isanother issue.

"Sometimes, to go to recreation places, you don't have good bike lanes for that, so maybe that's why people don't bike more often," said Cardozo.

She will submit a report to Charlottetown's sustainability office by the end of December.

The office will use the information to look for improvements that could get more people biking.
