"It's a nice recognition amongst my peers and others in the industry and it is flattering to be in the company of some of the other recipients," said Barrett.

The Order of the Tulip recognizes people from around the world who have made outstanding achievements in the promotion and celebration of the tulip.

Barrett was the only Canadian inductee.

Since Barrett introduced the first Veseys fall catalog in 1999, the company has grown to become the largest importer of Dutch bulbs in Canada.

"I was invited to receive the award at this year's World Tulip Summit, which is taking place in Korea this week, but unfortunately other business travel sort of interfered with that. And so I won't be there in person," said Barrett.

Veseys recently partnered with the Canadian Gardening Council to provide tulip gardens to 140 communities across Canada.

This helps celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original gift of 100,000 tulips to Canada from the Dutch Royal Family.
