Annual smudge walk held in Regina's North Central area

Hundreds of people turned out Thursday for smudge walk through Regina's North Central area.

It was the centrepiece of a indigenous-themed day that included entertainment, speeches and a celebration of positive lifestyles.

Myke Agecoutay, chief of the Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation and an organizer of the annual walk, explained that the smudge is to spiritually cleanse and purify the community.

Smudge walk in North central to bring together neighborhood

He noted that North Central has a high concentration of First Nations and Mtis people and also a high crime rate.

The smudge walk helps demonstrate a more positive path that people can take, he said.

"If you walk a spiritual lifestyle, you're more likely not to involve yourself in criminal activity or any sort of other activity that the community doesn't like," he said.
