Injured Saskatchewan bat on the mend in wooly bat-cave

Now here's a yarn: a Saskatchewan bat is making itself at home in the world's coziest bat-cave.

The big brown bat was taken to the Salthaven West wildlife rehabilitation and education centre inRegina last month after being found in a retail store.

It had had suffered a head injury and at first, it couldn't fly.

Peopleat the rehab centre have been nursing it back to health and plan to release it to the wild in the spring.

(Big brown bat is the actual name of the species, by the way, and is not to be confused with the little brown bat.)

"He's doing pretty good. He's taking short flights," said Megan Lawrence, the director of the centre.

While the bat healed, a volunteer crocheted a bat-cave for thecreature.

Bats like tight enclosures and the tent-like structure was just what the doctor ordered.

Lawrence says if people find a bat in their home during the winter months, they shouldn't put it outside.

"It will either starve or freeze," she said.

Instead, call a wildlife rehabilitator for help, the centre says.
