Sask. musicians Jake Vaadeland, Rooky Kamiz among top winners at BreakOut West in Saskatoon

Breakout West a four-day music industry conference, three-night music festival and home of the Western Canadian Music Awards was held in Saskatoon over the weekend.

BreakOut West a four-day music industry conference, three-night music festival and home of the Western Canadian Music Awards was held in Saskatoon over the weekend, withRooky Kamiz andJake Vaadeland among the big winners from the home province.

Other top winners of the awards presented Friday night include modern country legendCorb Lund and the splashy,high-energyMieshaand the Spanks of Alberta.

BreakOut West, which has celebratedwestern Canadian music for more than two decades, is hosted by a different western Canadian city each year. The 2024 eventbegan on Wednesday and wraps up Sunday.CBCwasa sponsor and co-presenter of the CBC Saskatoon Showcase.

Among theWestern Canadian Music Awards announced were the2024 specialty award recipients.

This year's Heritage Award went toacclaimed concert presenter Zandra Kaszas. Trailblazing Saskatoon venue Amigos Cantinareceivedthis year'sKevin Walters Industry Builder Award, and the 2024Western Canadian Music Hall of Fameinductee is groundbreaking Saskatoon rock/blues groupWide Mouth Mason.

Today we were joined by Saskatchewan artist Aren Okemaysim okimawand BreakOut West executive director Mike Dawson. We have a ton of great musicians from Saskatchewan, but Mike helped introduce us to some new music across Western Canada that listeners might not know yet.
