'Unnerving' funnel clouds seen near Humboldt, Naicam, Sask.

A number of funnel clouds around Humboldt and Naicam, Sask., caused some concern for residents of the area on Sunday, as Environment Canada warned of possible tornadoes.

Lucas Moore was in Naicam, about 200 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, when he spotted several funnel clouds above the town around noon.

"I was actually just stepping outside for a smoke, and walked outside and I seen two or three funnel clouds forming just overtop of Naicam," Moore said.

Moore said he immediately called his girlfriend and told her to take a look, then got in his truck and drove towards the funnel cloud.

"At that point the wind picked up and it started to rain and hail a bit, and started throwing dust around in the fields," he said.

"I kind of followed it for a minute or so after that, then it died down right away. For a brief moment there, it was actually kind of vicious."

Moore took a video of the cloud and posted it to Facebook. His video quickly got hundreds of thousands of views.

"It was pretty crazy actually. Like I said, we don't get to see that stuff very often."

According to CBC meteorologist Christy Climenhaga the dust flurry seen in the video underneath the funnel cloud is called a dust devil, and wasn't a full-fledged tornado.

Another funnel cloud near Humboldt

Steve Armstrong from Watrous was in Humboldt with his family on Sunday morning for his daughter's fastball league tournament.The town is about 100 kilometres east of Saskatoon.

The game got cut short just before noon, however, when a funnel cloud formed in the distance.

"We saw the dark cloud and storm warnings and stuff like that and we saw the funnel just kind of drop out and it lasted for quite a little while," Armstrong said.

"It extended down and then it kind of sucked back up and went up and down. It kind of yo-yoed for a while."

Soon enough, a tornado warning was issued and the rain started pouring, cancelling the game and causing everyone to take cover in the nearby rink, Armstrong said.

Armstrong said he's seen funnel clouds in the area before, but didn't feel this one was too big of a threat.

"It's kind of unnerving to see one, but luckily the ones we saw were quite a ways away."

The tornado warning ended for the area on Sunday afternoon.
