U of S Huskies win 1st CIS women's basketball national championship

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team capturedits first national title, taking down the Ryerson Rams from Toronto.

The team clinched the win with a final score of 85-71 in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championship game Sunday in Fredericton, N.B.

"We were here 10 years ago and we got knocked out that first round, so a lot of those alumni were watching this game and cheering us," headcoach Lisa Thomaidis said after the game. "It just makes you realize how special it is and how many things need to fall into place to be able to win a national championship."

With emotions running high after the game,Thomaidis said it was the only thing missing from her career.

"It's something these girls are going to remember for the rest of their life for sure," she added. "[It's] something our program and our school is going to take a lot of pride in forever."

The team plans to hold a media conference at the airport in Saskatoon Monday night, when they return fromFredericton.
