Inquest ordered into death of man shot by RCMP

An inquest has been ordered into the death of a man shot by RCMP on a Saskatchewan First Nation.

Delbert Kenneth Pelletier, 44, was shot on Muskowekwan First Nation north of Regina on Nov. 13 following a standoff with police.

The RCMP have said Pelletier first fired a gun from inside the house, then came out and shot at police again before he was fatally shot.

Some family members have said the shooting wasn't necessary and police should have used tear gas or rubber bullets.

A Regina police inspector is preparing an independent report on the shooting and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is conducting its own investigation.

The inquest jury will examine how the death occurred and could make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in future.

The date and time of the inquest will be announced when the police investigation is finished.
