Lobbying rules needed, Sask. premier says

Saskatchewanshould have rules for lobbyists, like other provinces do, Premier Brad Wall says.

Right now, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island are the only provinces without such laws.

As a result, paid consultants or employees ofcorporations who arrange meetings with government officials or try to influence decisions can often do so in secret.

Speaking to reporters after the opening of the legislature on Monday, Wall said it's time for Saskatchewan to do what other provinces have done.

"There's a lot more economic activity in Saskatchewan right now and that brings lobbyists to our province," he said. "There oughtabe rules like there are in other jurisdictions. We know the NDP will have good ideas in this regard."

Wall says he will work with the Opposition to come up with rules for people who lobby politicians.

Other provinces, including Ontario, have set up lobbyist registries. Under the registry system, lobbyists are required to sign up and then update their client lists at regular intervals.
