'There is a lot of demand' Regina library says more English tutors needed

Regina Public Library is struggling to keep up with a demand for English tutors to help a recent wave of immigrants to the city.

Nancy MacKenzie, manager of community engagement, said there are about 200 people on a wait list to learn English.

"There is a lot of demand," MacKenzie said.

MacKenzie said a wait list is not uncommon, but Regina's recent wave of immigrants is a new challenge.

As of March 1, the city had taken in 447 Syrian refugees in just a couple of months.

Scheduling challenge

MacKenzie said there are a number of other reasons for thelarge wait list, including a challenge in matching the schedules of learners and tutors.

Also, there are a number of requirements new tutors need to meet, including a police background check and a training course.

Right now the library has about 220 volunteer tutors, including Elaine Ehman.

Ehman is tutoring Aushirqt Malak-Jaber,animmigrant from Egypt.Ehman said it's been a rewarding experience so far, and that she's learned a lot from her students.

Student Malak-Jaber said besides learning English, she's learning a lot about her new home, too.

"I like Regina. It is small, simple. I meet new friends," Malak-Jaber said.
