Regina streets overflow with jubilant fans

Thousands of delirious Riders fans took to the streets of Regina in celebration Sunday night.

Thousands of delirious Riders fans took to the streets of Regina in celebration Sunday night.

They honked horns, they waved flags, and at least one brave soul ran down a snow-covered street stark naked.

Regina residents who haven't had a Grey Cup to celebrate since 1989 appeared to be making up for lost time.

People started spilling onto the street minutes after the Riders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19 at the 95th Grey Cup in Toronto.

By 9:30 p.m. CT, a crowd of several thousand had assembled at the corner of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue.

Strangers in green jerseys high-fived each other and hugged. They marched, yelled, screamed and sang songs. Fireworks were set off and somewhere downtown, church bells were pealing.

It was the beginning of what could be days of celebration in the Saskatchewan capital.

An official event welcoming the Riders home is planned for Monday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. CT at Mosaic Stadium.
