Regina strip club proposal gets OK from officials

Officials are recommending that a strip club be allowed in an industrial area on the east side of Regina potentially a first for the city under new legislation.

On Wednesday, the Regina Planning Commission will consider an application to put an "adult entertainment" establishment at 1047 Park St., which is the former home of the Whiskey Saloon.

Under a city bylaw, adult entertainment includes "live entertainment including strip-tease and wet clothing contests or similar adult performances."

The city bylaw requires that there be at least 183 metres of separation between the proposed strip club and schools, churches, funeral homes and daycares.

A city administration report says the proposal meets all the requirements. The proposal was circulated to the Dewdney East Community Association.

"The community association did not have any concerns with the proposal as there is sufficient separation distance from residential uses," the report said.

City council is expected to vote on the proposal at its Jan. 26 meeting.

Saskatchewan had long been one of the few jurisdictions in Canada where stripping in bars was prohibited.

That changed at the beginning of 2014, when the province updated its liquor laws. Total nudity is still not allowed in licensed establishments, but partially clothed dancers are allowed under the new rules.
