Sask. drug plan to cover stop-smoking prescriptions

Saskatchewan is including two prescription drugs under the provincial drug plan, in an effortto help people quit smoking.

Effective January 1, Champix (varenicline) and Zyban (bupropion) will be covered under the provincial drug plan.

"Our government has made a strong commitment to help our residents make healthier lifestyle decisions by reducing tobacco use," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "This is another measure under our Tobacco Reduction Strategy which is focused on the principles of prevention, protection, and cessation."

Series of measures

Last August the province moved to prohibit tobacco use on school grounds. In October it became illegal to smoke in vehicleswith children under 16, within three metres of doors, windows and air intakes of public buildings, and in the enclosed common areas of multi-unit dwellings.

Next April the sale of tobacco in pharmacies will be outlawed.
