Saskatchewan wildfires' area larger than Toronto

The 7,362 square kilometres burned by Saskatchewan wildfires in 2015 is larger than all of the Greater Toronto Area.

This graphic shows how the combined surface area of Saskatchewan's 2015 wildfires is larger than that of the GTA.

Saskatchewan has already doubled its wildfires compared to 2014. This year,more than 580 fireshave burned a total of 736,000 hectares.

How big is that? It's7,362 square kilometres, an area that's larger than all of the Greater Toronto Area: the GTA sits on 7,124 square kilometres of land.

The difference is 238 squarekilometres.

Much of the blame lies with the Egg fire, which has forced awide-scale evacuation order for the La Ronge, Sask., area, displacing 7,900 evacuees.
