Intense thunderstorm rattles southern Saskatchewan

Environment Canada meteorologists tracked a severe thunderstorm Saturday night that led to a brief, one-hour longwarning that the storm could generate a tornado in the Swift Current area. The warning was ended around 8 p.m. CST.

A warning related to severe thunderstorms across southern Saskatchewan was still in place.

"Large hail can damage property and cause injury," the weather office noted in a statement Saturday night. "Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles."

Throughout the evening, the storm produced strong wind gusts and the weather office warned of the potential for nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

The storms were moving east at 70 km/h. As of about 9 p.m. CST, the weather office said Regina was in line to encounter the severe weather.

The disturbance was noted earlier in the day tracking eastward across northern Montana before entering Saskatchewan, where it triggered thunderstorms over southern parts of the province.
