Parts of east-central and northeast Saskatchewan are being warned to brace for a winter storm Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says a strong low pressure system from the south will bring freezing rain later this afternoon.

That will turn into heavy, wet snow as the storm moves into the evening.Gusting northwesterly winds will create furtherhazardous road conditions, ECCC says.

Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin and Carrot River are among the places under winter storm warnings.

Pelican Narrows, Cumberland House and Creighton are among those under snowfall warnings.

ECCC says travel is not recommended in those areas, as heavy snow will makeit difficult to drive.

The weather office says the system could bring as much as 30 centimetres of snow before it wraps up Wednesday morning.
