Souls Harbour hosted itsannual Thanksgiving dinner Friday, serving a selection of traditional foods during a noon-hour gathering for the homeless, working-poor and anyone who needed a hot meal.

"Today was a great day to have it," Patty Humphreys, marketing manager for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, said. "Some schools have the day off, for the children ... so I'm hoping that we have as many kids and families as possible."

Humphreys said they planned to serve about 750 guests and estimated that one-third would be youngsters.

Generous donations were made to support the dinner, with Humphreys noting that 30 turkeys were prepared.

"Some people have been coming many years," Humphreys added. The special meals have been taking place for over 10 years. "We have guests that [tell us] we are their family tradition."

She said the atmosphere at the dinner is very open and friendly.

The charity is already planning for another special mealduring the Christmas season.

"People are so tremendously generous during the holiday season," she said. "We'll see that, right now, carrying us through to the end of December."
