Retired Roughrider cheerleader pops the question at Taylor Field

Steven Fontaine and Matt Cameron had a very personal farewell to Taylor Field last night by getting engaged at the stadium where they first met.

The couple has been together for nearly three years, and first met when Cameron spotted Fontaine on the Taylor Field sidelines as a memberof the Roughrider Cheer Team. Fontaine decided that the stadium would make the perfect place to pop the question.

Fontaine planned the ruse for months in advance.

"I'd like to think I'm that good at keeping a secret, and I'm that stealthy," said Fontaine. "He knew something was up."

Months ago, Fontaine began his planning by contacting the Roughrider Cheer Team's coach and the Roughrider administrationto get the green light. From there, he worked with cheer teamto execute the proposal.

"They put it together perfectly, because I couldn't be there to do it because I [am] living in Calgary now," said Fontaine.

Gameday

The next step for Fontaine was to get Cameron to the stadium for game day. As the couple recently moved to Calgary, attending the game would have to involve taking a road trip back to Saskatchewan.

"I was really, really adamant about going to this game, and taking time off work," said Fontaine. Cameron was unsure if he could get the time off to make the trek.

"I was like, 'Well you just find a way, I don't care how," said Fontaine.

Fontaine had planned for it to happen a couple hours before kick-off, so he told Cameron the cheer teamhad invited them to come watch their practice before the game.

As Fontaine and Cameron walked into the stadium, it looked as if the cheer teamwere just practicing their stuntsbefore the game.

The tops of the stunts were all holding signs. One by one, they held them up, reading: Will you marry me? Then Fontaine asked the question.

"I was so nervous. I knew that he was going to say yes, well I was hoping I was about 90% sure," said Fontaine.

Fontaine said Cameron wasn't completely surprised.

"It was something we both talked about and wanted," said Fontaine. "We didn't know which one of us was going to do it, because both of us wanted to."

"It was all kind of in the moment. Once I asked, we were both just really excited."
