3 fined $14,600 for illegal hunting in Weyburn, Sask., area

Illegal hunting of moose, deer and pheasants in southern Saskatchewanhas resulted in $14,660 in fines for three men.

The case was in Weyburn provincial court earlier this month.

Roger Brenton, 40, of Macklin, Sask., was fined $8,360 and has been suspended from hunting for three years.

He pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting moose and white-tailed deer, going over his limit hunting pheasants, shooting from a road at night and failing to take a hunter safety course.

Zach Payne, 32, of Ignace, Ont., pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting Brenton and received a $2,800 fine and one-year hunting suspension.

In an earlier court date, Dave Bessette, 27, of Weyburn, pleaded guilty to possession of illegally taken wildlife and one count of aiding and abetting Brenton poaching moose and white-tailed deer.
Bessette was fined $3,500 and given a one-year hunting suspension.

By receiving hunting suspensions in Saskatchewan, hunting privileges for the three are also revoked in Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the provincial government says.

A gun used in the offences, as well as all the meat seized, was forfeited to the Crown. The meat will be donated to a local food bank.
