Stormy weather possible: Weather office issues 'watch' for southern Sask.

Brace yourselves: The weather office says conditions are good for the development of very dangerous thunderstorms across southern Saskatchewan.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued at 1 p.m. CST Saturday for the following areas:

• Leader - Gull Lake.
• Swift Current - Herbert - Cabri - Kyle - Lucky Lake.
• Shaunavon - Maple Creek - Val Marie - Cypress Hills.
• Moose Jaw - Pense - Central Butte - Craik.
• Regina.
• Fort Qu'Appelle - Indian Head - Lumsden - Pilot Butte.
• Assiniboia - Gravelbourg - Coronach.
• Estevan - Weyburn - Radville - Milestone.
• Moosomin - Grenfell - Kipling - Wawota.
• Carlyle - Oxbow - Carnduff - Bienfait - Stoughton.

The weather office noted that the storms could generate destructive wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain.

The source of the bad weather? Montana, the weather office said.

"A disturbance tracking eastward across northern Montana is triggering isolated thunderstorms early this afternoon over northwestern Montana," Environment Canada said. "These thunderstorms are expected to intensify later this afternoon as they move northeastward into southern Saskatchewan."

While wind was the major concern, the weather office added a brief note about possible tornado activity.

"There is also a slight risk of a tornadic activity near the international boundary," the weather office said. "The thunderstorm activity is expected to move out of the region overnight."
