Kitten-geddon: 21 'dumped' cats looking for homes in Saskatoon

"This is a wake up call for spay and neuter beyond anything else we have seen before," said Saskatoon Street Cat Rescue.

Saskatoon Street Cat Rescue says this litter of cats, which numbers 21 in total, was "dumped" in a yard last week. SCAT is now searching for homes for the abandoned kitties. (SCAT)

A Saskatoon foster group has taken in more than 20 abandoned kittens in varying states of health, in what is being described as a "wake-up call" for spaying and neutering cats.

Saskatoon Street Cat Rescue, better known as SCAT, reported Thursday morning that 23 kittens, including two dead, had been abandoned in a yard last Sunday.

"We have responded to a truly horrible situation," the group's Facebook post began, going on to ask any willing fosters to take in the cats.

By Thursday evening, one home had taken six of the cats"that survived being dumped this weekend."

Eight of the rescued 21 were in need of advanced medical care, with all cats suffering from diarrhea and needing probiotics and specialty food.

"This is a wake up call for spay and neuter beyond anything else we have seen before," said SCAT. "This was likely only fouror fivemom cats' litters. It does not take long for one cat to turn into 30 cats."

The unexpected sheltering comes as SCAT is already beyond capacity with over 270 cats in its care.

2018 has proved a record year for the group, with 385 intakes so far.
