Saskatoon Children's Festival entertains kids in 4 languages

The PotashCorp Children's Festival in Saskatoon is making a number of changes as it adapts to the changing city. This includes storytime in English and three other languages.

"We really wanted to be inclusive, and we wanted to make sure our programming evolved to reflect our changing community," said Rachel Wormsbecher, the festival's general manager.

Saskatoon author Yann Martel will read some children's books in French, a local teacher will read stories in Cree, and an Inuit storyteller will be telling stories at the Saskatoon Public Library tent.

"Hopefully in coming years we'll have even more," Wormsbecher said. It's the 28th year in the festival and she said the city has definitely changed in those 28 years.

Wormsbecher shared her expected highlights of the festival:

• A musical puppet show called The Floating Mouse is coming from Calgary. It is on the main stage at 1 p.m. CST Saturday.
• The Juno award-winning children's musician Norman Foot will be on the main stage Saturday at 11 a.m. CST.
• The Street Circus will be on the outdoor stage Saturday at 1 p.m. CST. People can expect everything you normally see in a circus, says Wormsbecher, with a street performer flare.

This is the first year people can purchase a $10 festival pass to get into all shows.

The festival runs June 4-7 in Kiwanis Park.
