Family mourns city's first homicide victim of year

Lucy Moosewaypayo stood outside provincial court in Saskatoon and choked back tears while talking about her dead nephew.

"We'll never heal, we'll never see him again," she said.

Jonathen Livingston Moosewaypayo, 28, died half an hour into New Year's Day. Police were called to an apartment block at Avenue O and 22nd Street West and arrived to find Moosewaypayo on the walkway, bleeding from more than 20 stab wounds.

It was the first homicide of 2013.

No one in his family knows why he was at that building, that night. He worked full time at a local produce plant and rarely took time off, his aunt said.

"The first night he ventured out alone, someone killed him," she said.

"He had no right to take him, we'll never forgive him. He took someone we really loved."

Raven Don Constant, 19, was charged with second degree murder. He was charged with killing Moosewaypayo while in custody at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.

Constant was also charged with attempted murder and aggravated assaultfor two alleged attacks the same night. Those attacks occurred one block away, from where Moosewaypayo died.

He appeared in court this morning. Judge Brent Klause had to repeat questions to get the teen's attention in the prisoner's box.

Moosewaypayo's aunt said no one in the family knew the accused.

Constant will stay in custody until his next court date on June 5.
