Food trucks looking for new rules from City of Saskatoon

Saskatoon's food trucks want to see changes from the City of Saskatoon.

Speaking to a city committee yesterday, the Saskatoon Food Truck Association asked for a number of changes to how Saskatoon manages food trucks in the city's downtown core.

Right now, a six month permit, which includes on-street parking, costs food trucks $2,830. Meanwhile, in Regina, food trucks are charged an annual fee of $1,400.

"We just feel like a seasonal parking pass may be better," said Erin Sadler, owner of Cocoa Food. "Then you can choose to start and stop whenever it's convenient for you, and your personal business."

The association would also like to be able to park for a longer period of time. Right now, food trucks can only stay in one area for five hours. However, it generally takes one hour for most food trucks to get ready to cook. Adding in cleaning up time, the available time to sell is limited.

City administrators say that any changes likely won't be in place until next year.

Sadler said she's happy with the reception she's received so far.

"I think it went really well," she said. "The councillors had questions and they seemed engaged and open to what we were saying."
