Sask. man gets 2.5 years in jail for defrauding Workers' Compensation of $137K

A former labourer from Hudson Bay, Sask., has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for defrauding the Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board ofover $130,000.

Larry Hayter was sentenced in the Court of Queen's Benchin Melfort, Sask., on Thursday, following a seven-day trial in late April and early May.

He was found guilty of filing two false claims totalling $137,377.76 and returning to work while receiving benefits.

"It's the largest amount of fraud we've ever had against the Saskatchewan WCB," said Heather Getz, a spokesperson for the board.

It's only the second time a person found guilty of defrauding Saskatoon'sWCB has been sentenced to jail time.

Hayter has also been ordered to repay the full amount to the WCB.
