City of Saskatoon asking residents to clear sidewalks to prevent ice build-up

As spring approaches and temperatures fluctuate, melting ice can lead to icier sidewalks, according to the city.

Saskatoonresidents are reminded to keep their sidewalks clear as the snow meltsto prevent icy conditions.

According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, here are some ways to keep your sidewalk clear:

  • Chip away theice during warm daylight hours.
  • Shovel snow ontoyour lawn and keep it offthe road.
  • Microwave sand before putting it on ice, allowingthe warm sand to stickand createa level of traction.

According toaCity of Saskatoon sidewalk clearing bylaw, residents are responsible for removing snow, iceand any other debrisfrom sidewalksalongside aproperty within the first 48 hours of it being there.

The fines range from $100 to $2,000 depending on how many times you're caught not following the bylaw.
