It's been slightly more than a year since Rochelle Dubois's world changed forever.

It was Sept. 9, 2021, when Dubois's nine-year-old daughter Baeleigh Maurice was hit and killed by a truck on 33rd Street in Saskatoon. The little girl was pushing her scooter across the busy street when it happened.

"It's not easy and everybody says stay positive and it will get better, but it doesn't get better. It's hard to stay positive because my life just keeps crumbling on me," Duboissaid Thursday.

Taylor Ashley Kennedy, 28, is charged with driving while impaired by cannabis and causing Maurice's death.

Dubois, her family and friends have come to court for all of Kennedy's appearances.

OnThursday, Kennedy was scheduled to enter a plea and elect a manner of trial. Instead, Dubois heard in court how Kennedy's lawyer is withdrawing because of a conflict. A new lawyer is taking the file, and Kennedy is expected back Nov. 30.

In the meantime, Dubois is trying to make sense of what happened. She said she has become critical of what she sees on the city's streets.

"I think that drivers need to be more aware of their surroundings," she said.

"I'm just tired of seeing Saskatoon drivers drive around with privilege. It's not fair."
