Family of baby killed in Saskatoon wants teen sentenced as adult if convicted

The great-grandmother of a baby killed in Saskatoon wants his alleged murderer sentenced as an adult if convicted.

A 16-year-old girl is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Nikosis Cantre on July 3. Family said the boy died of a head injury suffered while in his crib.

The 16-year-old had been taken in by the family when they met her downtown that weekend. She had recently walked awayfrom open custody atKilburn Hall.

"It hurts right here in my heart," said Eva Meechance outside of court Monday.

She said that she'd like to see the baby's killer go to prison for life.

Prosecutor John Knox said he's still reviewing disclosure with the defence.

The teen, who cannot be named because of her age, is back in court later this month.
