Saskatoon to test its emergency messaging system

If you'rein the phonebook or you've registered with Saskatoon'semergency notification system, prepare to take a call tomorrow night.

In light of the wildfires forcing evacuations in Fort McMurray, Alta., the City of Saskatoon's Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) will be testing its notifynowemergency messaging system Thursdayat 6p.m. CST.

"Unfortunately, when the unexpected does happen, many families find themselves with not enough information having to make rush decisions," said Ray Unruh, EMO director. "Notifynow is one simple and effective way to be informed during an emergency.

Saskatoon's EMO encourages all citizens in Saskatoon to sign up for notifynow.

On Thursdayresidents who have signed up for the service, or those who have a publicly available phone number, will be contacted.The message will clearly indicate that it's a test.

Residents who have an unlisted phone number, without a land line, or those new to the city are encouraged to sign up before Thursday's test run.

"You've got time to sign up before our test, and we encourage you to do that so you can see what this is like," Unruh said.
