Class field trips will now be able to use Saskatoon Transit buses for free.

Until June 2017, teachers, chaperones and students will be able to travel on regular transit routes for no charge.

"Moving students around the city can be expensive for teachers and parents," said Saskatoon Transit director Jim McDonald in a news release. "We see this as a way to make cultural and recreational activities around the city more accessible for teachers who want to take their lessons outside the classroom."

Transit hopes the new program will save school boards money, and show students the benefit of taking the bus.

Classes will be able to use the bus between the hours of 9 a.m. CST - 3 p.m.

Teachers have to book their trip two weeks in advance through a form on the Saskatoon Transit website.

The pilot project runs until June.
