Saskatoon theatre group to perform play on ice skates

A new play in Saskatoon is asking the audience to lace up and get involved.

As part of the Winterlude Festival in Nutana, the Sum Theatre will be performing the quintessentially Canadian story "The Hockey Sweater" on ice.

Theatre director Joel Bernbaum said it's all about celebrating Saskatchewan weather.

"We are used to surviving winter here in Saskatchewan but it's time we started thinking of ways to celebrate it and the arts are a great way to do that," Bernbaum said on CBC Radio's Saskatoon Morning.

The actors will be singing and sliding on cole Victoria School's ice rink all weekend and Bernbaum encouraged the audience to skate along with the actors.

With the warm start to winter, a play performed on ice does come with some issues. Bernbaum said they've been working to flood the rink but are prepared if the sun comes out.

"We've rehearsed the show on rollerblades so we have that in our back pocket as well," he said with a laugh.

The Winterlude Festival runs until Dec. 5 behind Victoria School.
