Suspect injured in Saskatoon police pursuit dies in hospital

A 21-year-old man hospitalized after a crash during a weekend police chase through Saskatoons west side has succumbed to his injuries.

A 21-year-old man hospitalized after a crash during a weekend police chase through Saskatoon's west side has succumbed to his injuries.

On Sunday, Oct. 23 at around 4:20 a.m. CST patrol officers with the Saskatoon Police Service spotted a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Avenue V South and 17th Street. Police saidthe vehicle was reported stolenthe day before along with a firearm and ammunition.

When officers attempted to make a traffic stop the vehicle sped off and a pursuit ensued.

Police said in an attempt to evade police the stolen vehicle drove into and struck a fence on the north side of a school in the 100 block of Bowlt Crescent.

The driver, a 20-year-old man, was taken into custody at the scene and a 21-year-old man in the passenger seat was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police also recovered four guns and ammunition from the vehicle.

On Tuesday police confirmed the injured passenger died from his injuries, leading to more charges for the driver.

He now faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, evading police, possession of a weapon, breach of probation and more.

The accused will appear in court Wednesday morning. The Criminal Investigation Section is continuing to investigate and oversight has been appointed by Saskatchewan Justice.
