Sudbury's mayor has fought to cut back the workforce at Tom Davies Square, but she wants to make at least one temporary job permanent.

Marianne Matichuk is calling for the auditor general's office to become a permanent fixture of the city government and she wants to see the contract for the auditor last at least three years.

"For transparency and accountability it's important that we have an office of the auditor general," she said.

"It has already been established that it is very beneficial to the city in terms of oversight and there has been a lot of savings found."

Matichuk plans to table her proposal at a Sudbury city council meeting later this month.

The city created the position of auditor general in 2009.

Currently, council votes every year whether or not to renew the auditor's contract. It could also decide to cut the position from the city payroll entirely.
