Beds, jobs axed at Sudbury youth detention centre

The Ontario government is cutting the number of spots at a detention centre for young men in Sudbury.

A total of 16 beds are set to go at the Cecil Facer Youth Centre, along with 49 staff jobs.

According to the province, the 48-bed facility is currently operating at less than half capacity.

Cecil Facer is a secure custody facility, where young men typically in trouble with the law receive education, health care and counselling.

The province said this cost-cutting measure is one of three such moves targeted at youth detention centers in the province.

The government credits itself for a range of other community based programs that it claims has kept kids out of custody and kept incarceration numbers down.

The province said no youth in Sudbury will be affected by the cuts.
