Harm-reduction home coming to downtown Sudbury

A home for people with addiction or mental health problems will be set up inSudburyfollowing a major investment from the Northeast Local Health Integration Network.

TheLHIN, which manages health-care funding for the region, said Friday it is investing nearly $2.3 million to help those living with addictions or mental health illnesses inSudbury.

Roughly half of that funding will go towards the creation of a harm-reduction home downtown, which will offer a managed alcohol program.

"Police can actually save money by actually being on the street doing what they need to do," saidSudburyMPPGlennThibeault.

"And at the same time we don't always necessarily have to see the same repeat visits. And that's the stuff that we need to start addressing and that's, I think, the important piece of a harm-reduction strategy."

The harm-reduction home will be run by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health -Sudbury/Manitoulin and is scheduled to open by the end of the summer.
