Extended heat warning through Saturday prompts Sudbury to activate heat response plan

The city of Greater Sudbury has activated its Hot Weather Response Plan as a heat warning in the city continues today and the temperatures are forecast to remain high throughSaturday. To help people access cool spaces, the city is extending hours at four public libraries.

The city of Greater Sudbury has activated its Hot Weather Response Plan as a heat warning in the city continues today and the temperatures are forecast to remain high throughSaturday.

To help people access cool spaces, the city is extending hours at four public libraries until 8p.m.

They include the main public library as well as the New Sudbury, Valley East and Chelmsford branches.

Tomorrow, the main and south end branches will be open from 10 a.m until 6 p.m.

Other libraries will be open regular hours.

There will be extended hours for lifeguards at city beaches today and tomorrow.

People can also cool off at theGerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex until11 p.m. andfrom 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The city is reminding people that splash pads are open until 9 p.m.

City and community outreach teams will provide support to homeless and vulnerable populations as part of their regular outreach program, including providing transit tickets to enable access to cooling centres, drop-ins and other safe locations.

They'll also be providing water and refillable water bottles as needed, and will connect people to services and supports.

There is an outdoor drinking water fountain open at Memorial Park along with a water bottle refill station.

There is also awater refill station available outside the Sudbury Community Arena.
