Public Health Sudbury and Districts is warning of increased COVIDactivity along with four positive flu cases. It says these factors may mean an early start to the respiratory illness season which typically doesn't begin until December.

"It's a bit too early to know if this year's influenza season is commencing early but with the four infections that have been confirmed, those are some concerning signs that this may be the case again." said health unit spokesperson, Afzaa Rajabali.

Rajabali says 12.75 per cent of PCR tests are positive and seven people have been admitted to Health Sciences North with COVID, Further, she says there are currently several respiratory and enteric disease related outbreaks in the community.

She says the health unit is urging people to get their COVIDand flu vaccines when the shots are ready.

"So far, we know that they will be available in the coming weeks," she said."The exact dates are set by the provincial government and are coordinated across the province. We will release updated information once we receive dates and shipments of vaccine." said Rajabali.

In the meantime, the health unit is advising people with symptoms to stay home, then wear a mask in public once they feel better. Officials say people can help prevent infection by washing their hands frequently and sticking to well-ventilated spaces
