Summer or, construction season is already underway for many Sudbury roads in the south end.

Regent Street between Bouchard Street and Walford Road will be one of the hotspots through the summer with major work being done. The street is being widened, watermains put in place, and improvements made to sewers, traffic signals and cycling markings.

David Shelsted, Greater Sudburys director of roads, says that anytime a major road is torn up, the traffic is felt elsewhere too.

If you take Paris Street regularly you are going to see more traffic because you are going to see the people who normally take Regent Street onParis, Shelsted said.

Anytime we work on Paris or Regent, it affects the alternative corridor. Weve also got some resurfacing work on the Kingsway that were looking at doing, but after we do the work on Lasalle [and] Notre Dame because we dont want to disrupt too many of the corridors that people take.

Phase two of construction is underway but phase three will continue into next summer.

Last summer the intersection of Lasalle and Notre Dame was completely torn up in order to widen the lanes and add new turn lanes. This summer crews will work on curbs, resurfacing and pedestrian islands.

Other major construction in the city will be at Big Nickel Mine Road which will be down to one lane. Loaches Road from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary to Armstrong Street will also be down to one lane for water main installation which is expected to take until September.

Construction on Ontario Street will be busy until mid-June.
