Moose calf found wandering in Sudbury area doing 'OK'

Wild at Heart Animal refuge says a moose calf found near Dowling over the long weekend is doing well.

A Sudbury man picked up the newborn animal off Highway 144 on Sunday and delivered it to the facility the next day.

The wildlife refuge centres Alicia Irwin said they originally thought there was another calf that was missing and needed to be returned to the centre. But now she said they believes the two are one in the same.

He's eating OK, he's not really suckling yet, he's taking in the formula, so that's great, she said.

He hasn't pooped yet, so we don't know if he's digested the cream he's ingested yet. Sometimes it just stays in their stomach and the stomach will rupture.

If all goes well, they will be able to reintroduce the animal back into the wild sometime next spring, Irwin said.
