Sport of FootGolf tees off in Sudbury

Sport, entertainment, business.Whatever you want to call it, FootGolf has arrived in Sudbury.

FootGolf involves players kicking a soccer ball down the fairway to sink itin what looks like oversized golf holes, saidChelsey Kangas,manager of the Blackstone Golf Course, the first course in northern Ontario to offer the game.

The emergingsport even has a dress code of aflat cap and argyle socks,Kangas said, adding she hopes the new game will bring more people to the course.

"There's more soccer players in Sudbury than golfers, so we wanted to add something a little extra because FootGolf is like mini-putt for soccer players," she said.

"It's a fun little extra sport you can go play."

Remy Lariviere of Sudburyand his two friends saw the sign at Blackstoneadvertising FootGolfand stopped in to try it out.

"We're soccer players. We're also golfers. But I mean it's something different and it's always cool to try something different, right?"

The sport of FootGolf has roots in the Nickel City.The president of FootGolf Canada, Don Mackay, is from Sudbury.

Blackstone is the 31st regulation FootGolf course in Canada, and Mackay said by the end of the season there should be a hundred courses across the country.

"It's as serious as you want to make it. I don't believe it's a gimmick. Time will tell. Is it a sport or a business? That can be argued," he said.
