Stunt driving in Sudbury is on the rise, according to police.

The Highway Traffic Act offence can include everything from popping a wheely to street racing. But Greater Sudbury Police said more than 90 per cent of the time they are laying the charge because they've caught amotorist driving 50 km over the speed limit.

In new numbers obtained by CBC News, police said they laid nine stunt driving charges in October. That brings the total for this year to 51 charges. In comparison, police only laid 27 stunt driving charges, about half that many, all of last year.

"Anytime we do an initiative, whether it be distracted driving, or school bus safety, it seems we always find one or two persons who have no consideration for any speed limits," said staff sergeant Rick Waugh.

Waugh said police caught people stunt driving over Halloween weekend without even trying.

"We weren't actually out looking for them, we were actually out looking for impaired drivers," Waugh said. "But just even switching from one location to another throughout the city we happened to come across two people who were travelling at excessive speeds."

John Coluzzi, a Sudbury police traffic unit constable, told CBC Newsthe majority of people don't even realize they're massively exceeding the speed limit or what is in store once they've been caught.
