Sudbury's coin club set to celebrate 60 years of collecting

The Nickel Belt Coin Club is marking its 60th anniversary this weekend with a special coin show. Bob Denton is the president of the club. He joined us in studio to talk about coin collecting and how it still holds a fascination for many people.

The Nickel Belt Coin Club in Sudbury is marking its 60th anniversary this weekend and to celebrate the group will showcase coin collections to the public.

Club president Bob Denton said it's an easy hobby to start.

"There's a little collecting of coins in everybody," he said. "Whether they're [in] a jar on your dresser or in your jewelry box or just in a drawer in a desk."

That's how Denton got started collecting himself. He said when he started sorting his spare change, he realized he was having a closer look at the dates on the coins. From there, he started to notice which ones he didn't have.

"It just progressed from there and then I wanted one of everything," he said with a laugh.

One particular coin in his collection that stands out is a gold coin from 1967 that was part of a set worth $40. Now, he said that gold coin is worth about $800.

"There's a half an ounce of gold, so that's where the value has increased."

The club will have the coin show on Sunday at at Dynamic Earth. Members of the club will have some of their rarer coins on display, and an appraiser will be on hand.
