Sudbury council to debate $50k ward 'slush funds'

Sudbury city councillors will look at tightening the rules around the always-controversial "healthy community funds" at a meeting on Tuesday.

Sudbury city councillors will look at tightening the rules around the always-controversial "healthy community funds" at a meeting on Tuesday.

The funds give each of the 12 councillors $50,000 to spend in their ward each year.

Critics have slammed them as slush funds, and suggest they're illegal.

Council will consider a staff proposal to put more restrictions on how councillors spend that money including capping grants to specific community groups at $1,000 and $5,000 for a specific project.

Currently, some councillors spend all their money in one place giving all $50,000 to one group or project.
