Players on the Sudbury Fivewon't be hitting the hardwood anytime soon.

The National Basketball League of Canada announced today that the remainder of its season is being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a press release, Audrey Stephenson, the league's deputy commissioner, said cancelling the remainder of the season and playoff games was a difficult decision.

"Our owners, management, support staff, players and coaching staff invested countless hours in preparation for the season and it's incredibly sad that we were unable to complete the year the way we would have liked to," the statement said.

The season was suspended March 12 as the number of COVID-19 cases began to increase.

"Our league remains dedicated to the health and safety of our players, officials, fans, staff and general public and we feel that our decision to cancel the season is a prudent one in order to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus," Stephenson said.

Stephenson added that the league intends to operate in the 2020-21 season.

The Five were second in the Central Division with a 12-10 record.
