Sudbury floatplane museum in the works

A former floatplane terminal in Sudbury isn't an historic building, but that doesn't mean it's coming down.

City councillors Monday night decided not to classify the former home of Austin Airways as a heritage structure.

The city owns the two-storey building and had plans to demolish it, making way for an expanded Bell Park boardwalk.

But now it sounds like the city will wait to hear from those who want to create a floatplane museum.

City planner Kris Longston said they understand that a business proposal for the museum is in the works, and will be brought forth at a later date.

"The museum aspect is something we feel can be dealt with at a separate time," Longston said.

In the meantime, the city will request that the Austin Airways plaque and monument be moved from Science North to the area near the canoe club.
