Pryvit! Sudbury's annual Canadian Garlic Festival celebrates 25 years

Garlic perogies, garlic cabbage rolls even garlic ice cream. The scent of all things garlic will be wafting out of downtown Sudbury this Sunday with the 25th annual Canadian Garlic Festival.

Garlic perogies, garlic cabbage rolls evengarlic icecream!The scent of all things garlic will be wafting out of downtown Sudbury this Sunday with the 25th annual Canadian Garlic Festival.

Things to know

  • Entry is $2 per person, with festival proceeds going to support the Ukrainian Seniors' Centre and various other charities in Greater Sudbury
  • Greater Sudbury shuts down the two northbound lanes in front ofSt Mary'sUkrainianCatholicChurch for the festival
  • Gates open at 10:00 a.m., food fair begins at 11:00 a.m.
  • Volunteers prepare thousands of garlic"nibblets" for purchase, including 700 dozen perogies and fresh cabbage rolls
  • The garlic used in the food is locally grown
  • Singers anddancers will entertain the crowd from about 11:30 a.m. until after 4:00 p.m.
  • According to a release from the festival, "children can enjoy arts and crafts, inflatable bouncing games, races and challenges"
  • A celebratory 3' x 6' cake will be cut at 1 p.m. to mark the 25th anniversary of the festival

The 25th annual Garlic Festival comes to Downtown Sudbury this weekend. To talk about it, we spoke with Linda Russell. She's the coordinator of the Canadian Garlic Festival. She told us what it takes to put on an event as big as this.
