Group applauds proposed events centre location

A group of supporters of an arena and convention centre for Thunder Bay is welcoming a recent recommendation to put the facility near the north cores waterfront.

Consultant Conrad Boychuk announced Wednesday the Water Street Bus Terminal and a nearby parking lot would be the best location for a 5,700 seat arena and attached meeting area.

The head of Citizens for a North Core Multiplex said the endorsement is more than simply where to locate the complex it's also about the spinoffs involved.

"The goal is to make downtown Port Arthur that place that people are just drawn to," Johnny DeBakker said.

"And when they get here, they automatically know to go there."

DeBakker said he believes the additional benefits will include things like new restaurants and bars, and will offer a focal point to which tourists will naturally flock.

He said people can put on their walking shoes and take in hockey games, concerts or other events.

A citizens group that was promoting an alternative site at Innova Park has been mum on the recommendation.

The public will get to weigh in on the recommendation on Nov. 21 and city council will make a final decision on the matter Nov. 26.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $106 million.
